San Luis Potosí

San Luis Potosi is one of the 31 states of Mexico and its capital is San Luis Potosí. It is located in north-central Mexico and is bordered by 8 other states, making it the state with the most borders. The states that border San Luis includes Nuevo León, Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Guanajuato, and Zacatecas. The largest cities include San Luis Potosí, Matehuala, Rioverde, and Tamazunchale.

In 1592, gold and silver deposits were discovered which triggered the establishment of the state. The state was given the name “San Luis Rey” (King Saint Lous) in honor of Louis IX of France and “Potosí” because the wealth of the state compared to the rich silver mines in Potosí, Bolivia. They hoped that San Luis Potosí’s mines would rival the Bolivian mine wealth, but this was never accomplished. In the 17th and 18th centuries Franciscans, Augustinians, and Jesuits came and settled in San Luis Potosí, building churches and buildings, many of which still stand.
