The State of Guanajuato (Spanish pronunciation: [gwanaˈxwato]) is one of the 31 states of Mexico. Its capital city is Guanajuato and the largest city in the state is León. It is located in north-central Mexico and is it bordered by Jalisco, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, and Michoacán.
During Colonial times, Guanajuato attracted Spanish prospectors that were interested in mining their silver, gold, iron, lead, zinc, and tin. Guanajuato produced large amounts of wealth for two centuries leading to the extraction of 40% of the world’s silver. Nowadays the state is known for its beautiful colonial towns which include the colorful city of Guanajuato, the expat paradise of San Miguel de Allende, and the leather center of León.
